SAFE Beach Party versus DANGEROUS Durian

THE DESIGN CONCEPT:

ASS Class of '73 are going to "Balek Kampong" this August for probably the last big reunion to celebrate their big 50th Birthday together. The party will probably last a week or two in Kota Kinabalu, and judging from the last reunion in '98, no other ASS class can compare to this bunch of party animals who were still looking for action long after the KOK and night clubs have closed, night after night. In school they were the noisiest, most rowdy, yet scored the best grades, earned medals during sports days, represented All Saints School and Sabah state in various things. Our class is surely the most adventurous, being scattered around the world like no other before or after us. So the logo should encapsulate this spirit of being a "party animal", adventurous and fun loving, courageous, enigmatic and mysteriously different from other ASS classes. Yet we are proud of where we originate from - our humble beginnings from a small town. In many ways we are like the durian - the King of fruits. This upcoming reunion is more than just a homecoming, but likened to going on holiday in another world, a planet of our own. Hence the concept: ASS Planet 50.

OK Guys n Dolls,

I never thought I would have to rationalise the ID logo for a reunion party (seems so ridiculous, doesn't it - when we have better things to do). (G)

If you must have it here it is:

We are talking about a singular LOGO not a MOVIE or a 20-chapter Harry Potter story about our lives. ... So which logo truly represents the person / image you want for yourself?

THE RATIONALE FOR BOTH LOGO DESIGNS:

Logo A (beach fun) -
Clean, law abiding, safe for children, no surprises, honest to goodness. Tend to take the tried and test route in life, no dirt, no risk, no need to imagine. Tend to think inside the box, don't try anything new. Try to please everybody, be nice to everyone at all times. Always meet up at the same coffeeshop and talk about/reminisce the same old hippy, lovvy-duvvy, stuff. Moralistic and heaven-bound to the point of self righteousness. I take myself seriously so don't joke around with me. Why try a new way when the old way has worked for generations? Things will always be the same - the beach, islands etc. will always be there for me. I am happy and contented being anonymous in a crowd, where they lead I will follow.

Logo B (Durian)
Enigmatic and mysterious on the outside, you don't know what's on the inside. Definitely proud of his/her roots because durian doesn't grow in Mat Salleh country. People yearn to try the fruit but will never know until you open up the inside and taste it, so to know me is to try me. I'm unpredictable, can achieve the kind of success in life which will even surprise my own parents. People who know me tend to love me, so I attract adventurous, exciting and exotic people just like myself. I can be totally lovable and I can be pungent so be careful with me because I am an enigma to the world. I'm a party animal I always stand out from the crowd.

Ten years from now when we are 60, our grandchildren will probably pick up the CD ROM and ask you why the logo. You can answer "because me and my classmates are like this... " (refer explanation for Logo A or Logo B above).

Some of us can fit comfortably with both concepts, so it's down to tossing a coin. Have fun... (G)

Sorry to object, Pete!!
(but not at all violently ~ very wimpishly, in fact).

You know how it is when your 1st (1998) novel not only becomes an best seller but is turned into a blockbuster movie, or like James Blunt, your very 1st debut album ~ every fan wants the same genre again!!!

Never saw the movie.... so it does nothing for me! But the rest might love it to bits, if we hear from them!!

But hey, Pete.
Just exercise executive remit and make an Art Director's decision for all of us!!
It'll be fine I'm sure as no one has squealed!!

Have attached a scan of the 1998 T-Shirt design, as a reminder and an eye opener for those who did not get to see it 1st time round..

Hi Pete,

Ingenius logo but I must say it might not mean very much to most people. I agree with Danny's view. I prefer the original ASS Planet 50 design you sent a few weeks ago. That has much more meaning for us ASS'73's. I could still incorporate the durian logo so as not to waste it!!
Please send me the higher resolution format that I could forward to the fridge magnet makers to copy exactly. Maybe send me something that can be cropped to fit into the fridge magnet size that we want them to produce. I plan to use Adobe Photoshop to manipulate the image. Is that OK?

Peter,

I know I am not entitled to comment on your logo since I can't attend the ReU... but I just can't help it given the choices.
Your Durian logo is exciting, funky and original, and most of all, its MYSTERIOUS.

OK, Yap..Yap Yap.... everyone is shouting... why not an informative logo that says eveything at one glance?........ BORING!

That's right... boring... nobody ask when they know everything about it.... end result?.... Ho Hum... nobody cares.

However when you see this Durian logo.... a MILLION begging questions strikes you... WHY? WHAT? WHO? (OK, only 3)

Well... Nice goody 2 shoes T shirt or a Funky Durian that leaves you speechless?

You all know what you want.......

Hi Pete and all:

We definitely like Logo B much better. Simple and understated, but yet hip and modern. We think Logo A is too "busy" looking. Logo B will lilkely "stick" to your mind better and people will remember it more.

However, to please everyone, why not have both!

Front and back.

Hi Pete,

Yes, I go for the durian - tough on the outside, soft and fragrant inside.
